Parental Leave Cover (34 weeks)

Location: Invercargill

About the role:
We are looking for an experienced reporter or Bureau Chief to cover parental leave with The Southland Express and Otago Daily Times, starting May 12, 2025, for 34 weeks. This exciting opportunity is perfect for those looking to develop their journalism and leadership skills. You’ll be based in Invercargill, writing articles, capturing photos and videos for odt.co.nz, The Southland Express, and Otago Daily Times.

As a full-time reporter, you’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment, breaking news, covering community events, and delivering impactful stories for both online and print platforms. If you have reporting experience or a journalism qualification, and an eagerness to engage with your community, this could be the perfect role for you. A valid driver’s license is required.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong journalism skills, including photography and videography.
  • The ability to build connections within the community and engage with a diverse range of individuals.
  • A passion for telling community stories and staying on top of the news
  • A commitment to fostering a positive, safe, and inclusive workplace.
  • Be driven to deliver high-quality work.

We offer:

  • Reporters may be rostered any day between Monday and Sunday
  • A great opportunity to grow your journalism and leadership skills
  • Full-time, fixed term position for 8 ½ months.
  • Salary based on experience.
